The town at the heart of the bay
Nelson Bay sits on the southern shore of a huge inlet, which Destination NSW describes as twice the size of Sydney Harbour, with Tomaree National Park to the east and the Stockton Bight dunes to the south.4 The shops, cafes and marina are all within a short walk of each other along the water.
That compact waterfront is why the town works so well as a base. The d'Albora marina on Teramby Road has secure berths and a full boatyard, and Destination NSW names it as a launch point for dolphin and whale watching tours.3 The cruise this site recommends leaves from Wharf 1 at the Cruise Passenger Terminal, 40 Victoria Parade, a few steps along the same shore.
Around Nelson Bay are smaller villages with their own character: Shoal Bay with its long calm beach, Fingal Bay further round the coast, and One Mile and Anna Bay towards the dunes.5 Port Stephens as a whole counted 75,276 residents at the 2021 census, with a median age of 47.6

Driving up from Sydney
The road is the most flexible way in. Destination Port Stephens describes the trip as a drive north of Sydney along the M1 Motorway.7 Destination NSW calls it an easy 2.5-hour drive for Port Stephens as a whole, and recommends a car for getting around its 26 beaches and coastal villages.1
The Sydney to Port Stephens drive time depends on where you are heading, though. Destination NSW's own page for Nelson Bay gives two hours and 45 minutes by car from Sydney, and the same for Shoal Bay.89 The two figures measure to different places, so treat them as a range, and add whatever the traffic adds leaving the city on a Friday afternoon.
Plan your departure around your cruise rather than the other way round. Boarding for the dolphin cruise starts 15 minutes before it leaves, and the operator confirms the exact vessel and departure point by email or text. If you are driving up on the morning of your trip, an afternoon cruise leaves room for a slow motorway.

Coaches, trains and flights
Without a car, the coach is the most direct option. Port Stephens Coaches run daily services from Central Station in Sydney via Chatswood, Pymble and Hornsby to Port Stephens, every day except Christmas Day.2 It drops you in the area without any parking to think about.
The train is another route. Destination NSW describes taking the train to Newcastle and a bus onwards, with the whole journey to Anna Bay taking just over four hours.10 Check the connection times carefully, because a missed bus can turn a manageable trip into a long wait.
Flying is quickest from further away. Newcastle Airport has direct flights to and from cities including Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide and the Gold Coast, plus seasonal international flights to Auckland.11 From the airport, Nelson Bay is about 30 minutes by car.8 Port Stephens Coaches also run a public bus from the airport to Newcastle Interchange up to 11 times a day, and a service to the Nelson Bay area.12

From Newcastle and the airport
How far is Port Stephens from Newcastle? Close enough for a day trip. Destination NSW gives 30 minutes by car from Newcastle Airport to Nelson Bay and 40 minutes from the airport to Shoal Bay.19 One guided tour from Newcastle allows a 70-minute van ride before its first stop at Tomaree.
Newcastle itself has small-group day tours that do the driving. One combines a Tomaree hike, lunch, a 3-hour whale watching cruise and a photo stop at Birubi Point in 8.5 hours, from $182. Another spends 1.5 hours dolphin watching at Nelson Bay alongside a mountain walk and a swim, lasting 8 hours from $169.
Both cap their groups at 11. They have only a handful of reviews so far, so read them before you book, but they solve the problem of seeing both the bay and the headland without a car. If you would rather drive yourself from Newcastle, the road runs past the airport at Williamtown and along the edge of the dunes, so a stop at Anna Bay on the way to Nelson Bay costs you very little time.
Parking and finding your boat
Finding the right jetty matters more than people expect, because several companies share the waterfront. The cruise this site recommends departs from Wharf 1, Cruise Passenger Terminal, 40 Victoria Parade, and the operator's confirmation names your vessel and departure point. Read that message on the morning of your cruise, not only when you book.
Other boats use the d'Albora marina at 6 Teramby Road. The 2.5-hour whale watching cruise boards at Dock C there, also 15 minutes before departure. The sailing catamaran and the express boat sit on Dock C too. Give yourself a few minutes to get your bearings on arrival. The waterfront is busiest just before the morning departures, when several boats board at once, and staff on the jetties are used to pointing lost passengers in the right direction. Ask rather than guess: a wrong jetty can cost you the cruise.
Leave time to park. One operator warns that parking at the marina is all paid, in 4-hour slots, and that busy days add time to finding a space. The Port Stephens Visitor Information Centre at 60 Victoria Parade opens 9:00am to 4:00pm on weekdays and 10.00am to 2.00pm on Saturdays, and closes on Sundays.21
Day tours from Sydney
If you only have a day and no car, a tour from Sydney is the simplest way to see the bay. The most reviewed one collects you from one of 21 pickup points in the city, spends 2 hours dolphin watching at Nelson Bay, then takes in lunch, the koala sanctuary and sandboarding at Anna Bay. It is rated 4.60 from 339 reviews, lasts 12 hours and starts from $140.
Expect a lot of time on the road. The itinerary allows 3 hours on the coach each way and returns you to Central Station by 7pm. If the weather permits, boom netting is offered on the dolphin cruise, so pack swimwear and a towel.
A smaller-group alternative leaves from Central Station's Kiss and Ride Bay with at most 11 guests, adds the Mount Tomaree hike, which takes 30 minutes each way, and lasts 12 hours from $175. It has no reviews yet, so it suits travellers happy to try something new. Whichever tour you pick, check the pickup point the evening before, carry a light jacket for the boat, and keep your phone charged for the operator's messages on the day.
